St Paul’s currently has a PAN (Pupil admission number) of 45 children per year group with the exception of our Nursery which has a PAN of 39. The school was expanded in 2008 to accommodate the additional Primary school places required in the area at that time. Due to the 45 children per year group, we teach in smaller sized but split classes. Last year we found that our Nursery intake was smaller than usual. After much consultation and fact finding it seemed that many schools were also seeing a decline in their Nursery numbers. This small Nursery class has transferred into Reception this year and has been followed again by a small intake of Nursery children. Whilst we are very proud to be able to teach our classes with smaller numbers of pupils, it is very costly. With the added financial pressures of not having a full intake of children this becomes unmanageable.
In this consultation we are proposing to reduce the PAN for Year 1, Reception & Nursery to 30 from September 2020. We also propose the following staggered reduction from 45 to 30:-
Year 2 (Sept 21), Year 3 (Sept 22), Year 4 (Sept 23), Year 5 (Sept 24) & Finally Year 6 (Sept 25).
This will revert the school to single form entry by September 2025. No pupils already in school will be affected by this reduction and no children will be “displaced” by these reductions.
