Christian Distinctiveness
St Paul’s Church of England Primary School is a School within the Diocese of Lichfield. We work hard to develop and sustain our school’s Christian distinctiveness. Our Head teacher and governing body have a clear vision of a school with a distinctive Christian character. We work in close partnership with our Christian Distinctiveness Advisor from the Diocese along with our local church – St Paul’s.
The Church of England’s vision for education (2016) is deeply Christian, with Jesus’ promise of ‘life in all its fullness’ at its heart. In line with the Church of England’s role as the established Church, their vision is for the common good of the whole community.
Wisdom, Knowledge
& Skills
Enabling discipline, confidence and delight in seeking wisdom and knowledge, and developing talents in all areas of life.
Hope &
Aspiration
Enabling healing, repair and renewal, coping wisely when things go wrong, opening horizons and guiding people into ways of fulfilling them.
Community &
Living Well Together
A core focus on relationships, participation in communities and the qualities of character that enable people to flourish together.
Dignity &
Respect
The basic principle of respect for the value and preciousness of each person, treating each person as a unique individual of inherent worth.
All Church of England dioceses and the Methodist Church use the framework for the statutory inspection of Anglican and Methodist schools (SIAMS), published by The Church of England Education Office. SIAMS inspections evaluate the distinctiveness and effectiveness of the school as a church school.
The SIAMS inspection has changed to now focus on one key question
“How effective is the school’s distinctive Christian vision, established and
promoted by leadership at all levels, in enabling pupils and adults to flourish?”
It explores this through 7 strands
- Vision & Leadership
- Wisdom, Knowledge & Skills
- Character development:
Hope, Aspiration & Courageous Advocacy - Community & Living Well Together
- Dignity & respect
- The Impact of Collective Worship
- The Effectiveness of Religious Education
Our Christian Vision
St Paul’s vision was created following consultation from parents, children, staff and governors.
It is rooted in Christian values and we believe the story of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10 embodies both our Christian Vision and School Values:
“St Paul’s is a welcoming Christian school at the heart of our community. We embrace, accept and celebrate all. We aspire for children to learn and live by Christian values of compassion, endurance and friendship, leaving us as confident, resilient, respectful individuals who flourish and are equipped to overcome challenges.”
Compassion
Love your neighbour as yourself. Mark 12:31
Endurance
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart. Colossians 3:23
Friendship
A friend loves at all times. Proverbs 17:17
British Values
The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated this year. At St Paul’s C of E Primary School these values are reinforced regularly.
Religious Education
Religious Education is a core subject at our school and is taught once a week in every class. As a Church School, although Christianity forms the major theme in Religious Education lessons, we have a duty to foster an accurate and increasing understanding of other religions. As a result, our pupils gain a greater insight into the world in which they are growing up. They are also able to appreciate the faith of others and develop a deeper understanding of their own beliefs and practices. We aim to provide each child with the opportunity to achieve his or her potential regardless of economic and social background. We endeavour to do this by promoting the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of children.
Worship
We have daily Collective Worship. The teachers and head teacher lead most collective worships, others are led by the children and sometimes visitors.
The worship ambassadors, pupils elected from every class, work to prepare, deliver and evaluate our worship.
On Fridays, we have a whole school Celebration Assembly where we gather to celebrate the work children have done in school. Children are presented with certificates and talk about their achievements with great pride.
Our School Creed
This is our school
Let peace dwell here
Let the rooms be full of contentment
Let love abide here
Love of one another
Love of mankind
Love of life itself
And love of God
Let us remember that as many hands build a house
So many hearts make a school
Amen
Our Church
We have a very close relationship with St Paul's Church. The leadership and members of the congregation are very supportive and are constantly thinking of new ways to support the school. Previous links between school and church include:
- Creation of hanging baskets by the school children to be placed in the church’s ‘Garden of Hope’
- Penpal letters between members of the church and children of the school
- Support in our fundraising community events such as the Summer Fair
- Leading worship
- Crosses created by the children in the school used for the church’s Easter reflections
- Visits to church for children of all ages
- Practical support of food packages for some of the families at our school
- Support in exploring chaplaincy within our school
The children at our school have the option to attend St Paul’s for Sunday Worship, if you would like to find more information, please visit their website below or follow them on Facebook.
Oasis
Oasis was established in Sept 2022; it is a space for reflection or prayer outside of the normal busyness of the school day. This engaging space offers children the chance to reflect on the world, other people and themselves. Activities are planned to suit people of all faith and none who want a still point in an ever changing world.
